Assessment

To qualify for a final grade it is required that the project assignment is fulfilled . The report is graded on the scale 3, 4, 5. A preliminary course program for 2017 can be downloaded here.

Aims of the course

The course aims at providing the students with the knowledge of linear and non-linear material modelling and how to these are treated by numerical methods. After finishing the course one should have enough knowledge of the mathematical description and the numerical treatment of the non-linear material models that one should be able to

  • describe different linear and non-linear elastic models
  • understand the frame work defining plasticity theory and be able

    create now models from this frame work.

  • understand the types of assumptions and simplifications done

    in a mathematical description of the material behaviour.

  • implement and thereby understand how a plasticity model is

    implemented in finite element program.

  • write a non-linear finite element program.
  • understand how a commercial finite element program treat non-linear

    material problems from a described theory.

  • follow the progress within material modelling both within the

    theoretical description of material models as well as the numerical issues.

Manifestation of the course

The course consists of a series of seminars on modern constitutive modelling, and a project assignment, which is pursued in parallel with the seminar series. The course gives an understanding of the mathematical description of non-linear material models (non-linear elasticity, visco-elasticity, plasticity, different fracture criteria) as well as its numerical implementation into a finite element program.

The projects, which treat a structural non-linear problem, contain an analytical and a numerical part. The complete project (analytic as well as numeric part) is presented in a written report, and the report is graded with respect to the technical contents. The structural and linguistic qualities of the presentations may also have an influence on the final grade --- positive or negative. The project work is carried through in groups of two students.

The format of the seminars is based on the assumption that the students have studied the material at hand in advance, so that a profound understanding can be achieved in discussion between teachers and students.

Particulars

The course is given by the division of Solid Mechanics. Questions can be addressed to the teachers in conjunction with the seminars, or at the offices of the division.
