Research activities
The primary objective of the research is to simultaneously measure, in a full-field sense, the evolution of strain at different scales (imaging, DIC and X-ray/neutron diffraction), elastic properties (ultrasonic tomography) and damage (ultrasonic tomography and DIC-based parameter identification) in cemented granular materials (clastic rocks) during mechanical loading. The experimental data will be exploited to develop and calibrate a continuum model that incorporates grain scale processes of (localised) strain, degradation and associated evolution of mechanical properties (pre- and post-failure).
